The Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce and Tourism hosts and co-sponsors a wide variety of events throughout the year, including networking opportunities, educational events and ribbon cuttings.     PHOTO TRANSFERS At AHACC Saturday May 25 10-4 and Sunday May 26 1-4, $75 Nancy Newhard Combine photographs and acrylic paint to make a very different sort of mixed media piece We’ll talk a bit about how to make choices and then dive right in. Using provided paper, gel medium and acrylic paint we will work on YUPO, a very bright white synthetic paper. You bring a brown bag lunch, your brushes (soft ones, like acrylic or watercolor brushes) and 10-12 photos. We will work from black and white copies of the photos so you can keep your originals intact. Old family photos work great; a sense of humor and adventure are perfect accessories. Yes, you could do something similar on a computer with a photo-manipulation program but then you’d miss half the fun. Ages 16 and up.     Saturday, May 25, 7:00 p.m. The Farm Hands Bluegrass Quartet at the Masonic Amphitheatre. In 2013, the Farm Hands Bluegrass Quartet was nominated for 7 Bluegrass Music Awards including Band of the Year, Gospel Band of the Year and Entertainer of the Year. They are one of the busiest touring bands in bluegrass, performing over 150 dates per year. For anyone who has seen them in concert, none of this comes as a surprise. The Farm Hands are one of the most exciting and talented bands in bluegrass music. The group features 4 award winning singers, musicians and songwriters, including two long time veterans of Nashville's Grand Ole Opry.   • 06/04 - WHAT A RELIEF! COLLOGRAPH PRINTMAKING
    Tuesday June 4 and Thursday June 6, 6-8pm $10, materials provided, Kyle Keyser A Collograph is a collage printmaking technique that uses found materials and a relief print making process. You will make a printing plate on Tuesday by sticking and gluing materials on a cardboard plate, coat it with varnish. When it is dry you will use it to make a print. The results are amazing. All ages welcome, a great class to do with your kids! Participants must be able to use scissors and glue.   • 06/08 - Make It and Take It: Whittling with Michael Denton
    Saturday June 8, 10:30 AM – 3:00 PM Using just a sharp carving knife, (not power tools!) you will learn the magic of whittling by mastering a few basic techniques. After whittling your project you will finish it and sign it to take home. The class explores short whittling (woodcarving) projects that emerge from a block of basswood. It also provides finishing tips and techniques for preserving your completed projects. The class requires no previous experience and no tools, (but (bring yours if you have them). Beginners are encouraged. It also reinforces the safety and techniques for developing a lifetime hobby. The class offers tips and tricks to improve other projects and offers other projects to challenge you to continue whittling or woodcarving. It also provides resources for other projects, tools, wood, and supplies. Instructor will provide wood carving blacks for class project, carving project instructions, class handouts, a carving resource list, finishing supplies (sealer, paint, brushes) and a Carver’s Goodie Bag. STUDENTS should bring a sharp carving with a fixed blade (NO exacto or craft knives with break off blades!), a six-inch ruler, Pencils (two #2, sharpened), Band aids, Carvers glove for finger and hand protection (a tightly woven canvas gardening glove or canvas glove with a rubber reinforced palm from the hardware or grocery store will work for the purposes of this class) Strop and sharpening supplies if you have them. . We're back with one of the Eastern U.S.'s most highly rated events, which debuted in 2010: The first dedicated gran fondo east of the Rockies. As always, we're offering all the elements of a traditional European gran fondo, with a mass-start, full course elapsed and individual climb electronic chip timing, fully stocked rest stops and neutral technical support. This year, the event is part of the POWER PEAKS CHALLENGE RIDE SERIES, a three-event, Virginia-based series along with the Cirque Cyclosportive and the Gran Fondo Virginia. We'll soon be offering individual training plans from Peaks Coaching Group and cycling coach Hunter Allen that will allow you to specifically prepare for the challenges of our courses. Our 2013 courses have been designed to optimize althletic challenge, rider safety and scenic beauty. We've responded to your suggestions and incorporated them into our 2013 courses. The Gran Fondo route is our toughest course to date, with over 11,500 feet of climbing, while the Piccolo Fondo is shorter and features less climbing than our particularly challenging 2012 edition.   • 08/01 - Shakespeare in the Park at the Masonic Amphitheatre
    At 7:00 p.m. enjoy "Much Ado About Nothing" presented by the Traveling Players. Tickets: $5.00 and/or donation to the Food Pantry. Much Ado About Nothing is a comedy by William Shakespeare about two pairs of lovers, Benedick and Beatrice, and Claudio and Hero. Benedick and Beatrice are engaged in a very "merry war"; they are both very glib and proclaim their scorn for love, marriage, and each other. In contrast, Claudio and Hero are sweet young people who are rendered practically speechless by their love for one another. By means of "noting" (which sounds the same as "nothing," and which is gossip, rumour, and overhearing), Benedick and Beatrice are tricked into confessing their love for each other, and Claudio is tricked into rejecting Hero at the altar. However, Dogberry, a Constable who is a master of malapropisms, discovers the evil trickery of the villain, Don John.
